Black and White

I walked through the aisle of time
And I caught a distinct sound
One that was sweet and sublime
A melody that singly bound
The black and white of my former time
With every note, I was drawn closer
Until it sounded more pronounced
And the memories made even clearer!
For a moment I paused to wonder
Why the music had abruptly ceased to play
The chance once mine was gone to the yonder
But maimed and enfeebled, I had to stay
The black and white ivories continued to linger
Now foreign to my phalanges, tears deluged
And at each meeting comes a sigh
Here was my comfort, my refuge
For hours and hours I sat depleted
But with every touch, my fingers come aroused!
With every note was music conveyed
Every music was passion expressed
And with every expression was memory stirred
Black and white, bitter and sweet
In harmony, they sought to replenish
The feeble, the confused, the delicate
The pianissimos tenderly declared
Of life’s gentle whispers of wisdom
The fortissimos gallantly proclaimed
Of the deafening silence of solitude and calm
The crescendos steadily stirred
Every wearied, decrepit soul, the wrecked
While the decrescendos brought at ease
The busied, confused and hurried intellect
Every melody played to existence
The memories of black and white
When fears were always wiped when dense
By each sheer trill of notes’ delight
The black and white ivory keys now cleanse
The desolated heart’s catastrophe
For in music’s devoted ivory tower
Was found her truest sense of security.
